Choosing a Perfect Holiday Tree

Choosing the perfect holiday tree is a process that is unique to each person. Some want a perfect, symmetrically shaped tree while others prefer a tree with character. One family may want a wide tree to hold the most decorations possible. For another, a skinnier tree may be the perfect choice. Before going out to select a tree, decide where it will be set up in your home and what size would be ideal, remembering that the tree will be able to last longer if located away from heating vents or radiators.

A fragrant tree is important to many. A tree that has a branching structure that can beautifully and easily carry the desired lights and decorations is usually a must have. Choosing a tree with a straight trunk makes setting it in a stand much easier.

What is most important is to select a tree that can last through the entire holiday season. There are a few simple tests to make sure the tree is as fresh as possible. The needles and the branches should be pliable. Run your hand over a branch. The needles should be pliable, not brittle. Likewise, gently bend an outer branch or two, which should also be pliable. Give the tree a shake, or, if possible, lift the tree an inch or two off the ground and drop it. Heavy needle drop indicates a dry tree, but be aware that even a fresh tree will drop a few needles.

By far the best-selling types of holiday tree sold in Arapahoe County are various species of the fir (Abies). This type of tree offers a great combination of longevity, structure and fragrance. The soft, short needles allow for easy tree trimming. Varieties found at various sellers in past years are the top selling long lasting Fraser Fir, the most fragrant Balsam Fir, the strongest branching structure Noble Fir, as well as the Douglas, Grand, Nordman and Concolor Firs.

A holiday tree becomes your perfect tree when you choose it!
